Question about two databases on one server

Hello,

I was wondering if it is possible to have two completely seperate DOORS databases on one server. If this is not possible has anyone had experience with asking IBM to split an existing license from say 10 users to one license of 5 on one server and another of 5 on another server. I realize this would need to be done by IBM licensing but just wanted to get a feel for others having had this done.

A DOORS database server is not licensed, the DOORS client is. So you can have as many database servers (i.e. databases) running as needed (with different ports if they reside in the same server platform).

Then you point to these different database servers by modifying the DOORS client startup properties or command line parameters with a -data switch - read more about this in DOORS help section "Summary of command line switches".

Hello Colin,

yes it is possible to run several DOORS databases on one server: just select a different port for them.
Start the DOORS server demon with a '-port <port-number>'.
We have even running DOORS 7 and DOORS 9 databases on one server (with different port numbers).

ok great. Are there instructions for setting up a second database in any of the docs? Or do I simply follow the setup like I did the first time and define a different port.

You don't install DOORS server software to get the 2nd database, you create a new service. Info is in the Install Guide (or is it the Managing DOORS guide...).

o Create a new folder to house the new database; presumably sibling to the first one.
o Allocate a port (and return port) for the new service; perhaps 36688 and 36689.
o Create the service. IIRC: doorsd -minstall option, defining the port and datalocation.
o First time it will display instance 00001, which you use to un-install it and when
debugging in the Registry.

I run a lot of DOORS; got 12 or so databases running on my client, of about 6 different DOORS versions.

Find doorsd.exe. Open Command prompt window. Navigate to location. doorsd.exe -minstall /?.

Hi sorry one last followup ignorant question ... I know how to change between databases on the client using the Doors config tool which effectively edits the registry. The Doors login of course displays the port@server that login to but it is greyed out and cannot be changed. Is there an easier way for the client to launch one DB or the other?

Just start the DOORS client with the option "-d port@server" or "-data port@server"
It is in the online help: Configuring DOORS > Summary of command line switches
(I have several short cuts on my desktop for several DOORS databases.)

It is in the Managing Telelogic DOORS manual (for v9.1), page 138 & 139.

We are using a DOORS 8.3 server and a DOORS 9.2 server on the same workstation without a problem. Their DB ports are different as expected.
